Stoneyholme Nursery - Laying the foundations for lifelong learning…….looking inside the child and out of the window.

'Practitioners must consider the individual needs, interests, and development of each child in their care, and must use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for each child in all areas of learning and development’. Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2021

Our Curriculum is based on each child’s interconnecting worlds:

  • My world,
  • The world around me
  • The world beyond.

Our Curriculum - what we want our children to learn

  • The curriculum is a top level plan of everything the early years setting wants the children to learn
  • Planning to help every child to develop their language is vital.
  • The curriculum needs to be ambitious. Careful sequencing will help children to build their learning over time.
  • Young children's learning is often driven by their interests. Plans need to be flexible.
  • Babies and young children do not develop in a fixed way. Their development is like a spider's web with many strands, not a straight line.
  • Depth in early learning is much more important than covering lots of things in a superficial way.

Our curriculum is based on the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and it is designed around the needs of our young children. It sets the standards for development, learning and care of children from birth to 5 years old to ensure they learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right  foundation for good future progress through school and life.

Curriculum Progression and Key Learning Steps - Play is children's work!

If your child comes home and says, "I've been playing all day", that is just what you want to hear! At Stoneyholme Nursery School, we provide play opportunities for children to learn through play.  This is how our children explore and make sense of the world in 7 areas of learning and development:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical
  • personal, social and emotional development
  • Mathematical development
  • Literacy
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive, arts and design

. We are excited to share how we implement our broad and balanced curriculum with you so you can see how we teach our children as they learn through play. We do this through a combination of child-led play and  also some adult-led direct teaching. Our experienced and skillful team use your child's needs and interests to plan challenging and enjoyable activities and experiences.

Alongside these 7 areas of learning and development, the way children learn or the characteristics of effective learning weave through them all and describe how your child learns best so that they know more and remember more. These are:

  • Playing and exploring: finding out and exploring, playing with what they know and be willing to 'have a go'
  • Active learning: being involved and concentrating, keep trying, enjoying achieving what they set out to do
  • Creating and thinking critically: having their own ideas, making links and choosing ways to do things.
